Gov. DeWine’s $1,000 per young child tax credit is more than just policy—it’s a statement about who we are and what we stand for.

As a former state legislator and now a county commissioner, I’ve dedicated my career to advocating for policies that strengthen families and ensure children have the best start in life. As a Republican, I believe in fiscal responsibility, the dignity of work, and the power of strong families to shape the future of our communities.

That's why I wholeheartedly support Gov. Mike DeWine's proposal to create a $1,000 per young child tax credit − a commonsense, pro-family policy that aligns with conservative values and places Ohio's children at the forefront.

Republicans have long championed tax relief to empower families, and this proposal exemplifies that commitment. It allows parents to keep more of their hard-earned money − funds that can be directed toward child care, groceries, diapers, or future education savings. We witnessed this approach under President Donald Trump with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which doubled the federal child tax credit and made a portion of it refundable for families with low tax liabilities.

This reform wasn't merely about numbers; it recognized the hard work of raising a family and provided parents with the financial flexibility to invest in their children's futures.

Vice President J.D. Vance was also a strong proponent of expanding the child tax credit during his time in the Senate, advocating for a significant increase to ease the financial pressures on parents. His leadership reflected the growing recognition among conservatives that policies supporting families are not only fiscally responsible but also central to strengthening the fabric of American society. Gov. DeWine’s proposal reflects this vision at the state level, focusing on families with young children, where costs are highest and support is most crucial.

For conservatives, tax policy should reward work and support families. A refundable child tax credit assists working parents in managing the escalating costs of raising children. Child care costs can rival mortgage payments today. Providing a modest yet meaningful tax credit enables parents to remain in the workforce while ensuring their children receive necessary care. It also acknowledges the vital role parents play in our economy.

The task of raising children is indeed work, and our tax code should reflect that reality. Moreover, it preserves family independence. Instead of relying on bureaucratic social programs, this tax credit places funds directly into parents' hands, trusting them to make the best decisions for their families.

My efforts to improve maternal and young child health in Ohio have shown me that economic stability can be the difference between a family thriving or struggling. This tax credit is not just pro-family − it’s pro-life. Research shows that many women facing unplanned pregnancies say financial insecurity is a major factor in considering abortion. By reducing economic stress, we empower parents to choose life and build a future for their children.

This is why more Republican-led states are adopting similar policies. Indiana, Montana, and North Dakota have all advanced versions of state-level child tax credits, demonstrating that this isn't a partisan issue − it’s a pro-family issue.

Ohio has an opportunity to lead. By enacting this tax credit, we send a clear message that we value families with young children − that we recognize the sacrifices parents make, the work they do, and the importance of raising the next generation in a stable and supportive environment. Strong families build strong communities, and strong communities are the foundation of a thriving Ohio.

Gov. DeWine's $1,000 per young child tax credit is more than just policy − it’s a statement about who we are and what we stand for. Let’s get this done. For Ohio families. For Ohio’s future.
